Ski touring surrounded by 3,000m high mountain peaks
Ski tours in the Ötztal and in Obergurgl
In the last couple of years ski touring has become more and more of a trend sport. Ötztal offers a true El Dorado for this off-piste activity, and indeed, even more. After all, Obergurgl is surrounded by several 3,000m high mountain peaks. Just pack your equipment and off you go!
Ski tourers will be able to reach peaks where no cable car leads up to, hike through peaceful tributary valleys and overcome challenging mountainsides. Experience the magic of the winter landscape and fantastic views over the summits of the Eastern Alps during a ski tour in Obergurgl.
Eisseekögele ski tour (3,228m) – 3.5hrs, altitude difference of ca. 1,000m
This tour is considered to be one of the classics and finishes with one of the Ötztal Alps' most beautiful downhill runs. The ascent starts at the end of Obergurgl with a flat passage along the piste up to Schönwieshütte. Alternatively you can also take the Gaisbergbahn cable car and then ski down to Schönwieshütte. From there the tour leads you through the gorgeous Rotmoostal valley and then towards Hocheben Scharte. You can already see Eiskögele's peak in the south. Via a firn snow field you will reach the steep mountain top ascent. Due to its exposedness, the last section just before you get to the highest point will require a bit of courage.
This ski tour to Manigenbachkogel has a 1,400 meter ascent and is therefore one of Ötztals most challenging tours. The undertaking is still worth the effort and the route is also recommended as a firn snow tour in spring. The tour starts in Obergurgl at Rauhbichl along the Gurgl Ache river. Continue to Beilstein and over the Manigenbachferner glacier to Manigenbachkogl.
Hinterer Seelenkogl (3,472 m)
Hinterer Seelenkogl is located right on the main crest of the Alps (Alpenhauptkamm) and captivates with outstandingly gorgeous views. The ascent of this high alpine ski tour is accompanied by panoramic views all around. From the Gaisbergbahn valley station it takes about 4.5 hours to get to the end of this tour and along the way you will overcome an altitude difference of 1,560 metres. In good snow and avalanche conditions you can also take the Gaisbergbahn or Hohe Mut Bahn II cable cars in order to get up on the mountain. The subsequent section over the steep west-facing slope of Hohe Mut up to Rotmoostal is accessible only in good melting snow-crust conditions. The actual ascent leads over Rotmoosjoch to the South Tyrolean side and over Planferner to the Wasserfallferner plateau. There are lots of possibilities for your downhill run, e.g. over the steep Wasserfallferner glacier and Rotmoostal and then back to your starting point in Obergurgl.
There are various other fascinating ski tours waiting for you in the rest of Ötztal, for instance in Vent, in Längenfeld or in Oetz. Make Obergurgl the starting point for your tour adventures in the Ötztal Alps and stay in one of the luxurious apartments at Chalet Obergurgl – your hosts will gladly send you a quote.
